What's Included
Type: Compatible with LEGO® sets
Material: Eco-friendly ABS plastic
Instruction:
For the LEGO Dune Atreides Royal Ornithopter 10327, the box is surprisingly compact. It matches the size of the Telephone Box, just a bit thicker. But don't let the size fool you; there's a lot packed into this set.
With 1369 pieces, this 18+ rated Icons set comes at a price of $165 USD or EUR. It's available for pre-order in select countries, shipping out on February 1st 2024. Now, let's see what's inside that grabbed my attention.
Upon opening, we find 10 numbered bags, a mysterious long box, the manual, an unnumbered bag, a loose link piece, and a paper envelope. That mysterious long box? It holds the brand new blade pieces for the wings—8 of them! These blades, at almost 32 cm (12.5 inches), are massive and beautifully molded in a special matte silver finish.
In this design, ZENE lighting uses very low-key lighting to avoid making such a sci-fi aircraft flashy, and also has more military concealment. The warm light in the cockpit makes the pilot appear faintly, which is very cool. The white LED in the front simulates the weapon system of the laser array, and the flame like lights on the wings and engine at the back make everything so realistic
Building Experience:
The build kicks off with a studded Technic core, incorporating new slopes from last year in a fresh color. This forms the lever for the wing-flapping mechanism. The instructions are detailed, matching the white cover of the manual. There's a brief intro to the Dune universe, showcasing the ornithopter's details and functionality.
Figures and Movie Ties:
Figures are a highlight, clearly inspired by the movie. The manual provides a close look at each character. Mike Psiaki, Design Master, shares insights, adding a personal touch. The build includes a detailed guide, a parts list, and then, it's time to dive into the construction!
The build involves an interesting mix of System, studded, and studless Technic elements. It's not a walk in the park; you'll encounter some tricky connections, and the set demands your full attention. Yet, there's a unique satisfaction in constructing the Technic functions with precision.
Functionality and Play:
The set boasts impressive functions. The wings extend with a two-handed maneuver, the flapping mechanism works flawlessly, and the landing gear smoothly engages. It's a sturdy model, surprisingly playable for an 18+ set.
Design Considerations:
Now, let's talk design. The cockpit is faithful to the movie, but some might find the lack of interior details disappointing. Exposed Technic elements might irk some, and the red tow balls stand out. The absence of a display stand might disappoint those looking for a dynamic flying pose.
For the value, it's an excellent set, offering a unique building experience and an impressive display piece. It's a testament to LEGO's engineering prowess, blending functionality and form seamlessly.
